Sewerage project in the pipeline

Works are almost complete for the Yarra Glen sewerage project.

IT WILL be smooth sailing soon for residents in Yarra Glen with the $8 million Coldstream to Yarra Glen sewerage project nearing completion.
Installation of a 75,000 litre emergency storage tank on the corner of Station Street and Maroondah Highway in Coldstream has recently been completed, which will provide additional capacity during heavy storms.
The project is expected to be completed by May and the final stages involve connection of the newly constructed 7.7 kilometre sewer pipeline along Melba Highway to Yarra Valley Water’s sewerage network, and the decommissioning of existing sewerage assets.
Yarra Valley Water manager Tony Kelly said by working to improve YVW’s sewerage services in the area, the company is ensuring that the system can continue to meet the needs of current and future generations.
“This sewerage upgrade will also have the added benefits of reducing the likelihood of overflows during heavy storm events into the environment, providing extra protection for the Olinda Creek and Yarra River, while also minimising odours in the area,” he said.
Earlier stages of the project have included the construction of a new Sewage Pumping Station at King Street in Coldstream to transport waste to treatment plants, construction of 562 metres of rising main, construction of a 2.8 kilometre dual sewerage pipeline between Coldstream and the Lilydale Sewage Treatment Plant – a total of 5.6 kilometres of pipeline and connection of the pipeline to Lilydale Sewage Treatment Plant.
It also involved an upgrade of the Sewage Pumping Station at Station Street in Coldstream with construction of a new 550 metre rising main, construction of a 570 metre pressure sewer pipeline including five pressure sewer connections and construction of a new 7.7 kilometre rising main along Melba Highway as well as decommissioning of existing sewerage assets.
