WHEN Healesville bricklayer Kirby Stafford heard that a woman had left her dog in the car at the Healesville Terminus Hotel, he was horrified at the situation and gladly told The Mail he was happy to promote responsible owner behaviour as a dog lover.
But several readers assumed it was Kirby who had left his dog in the car on that hot day (Owner warned after leaving dog in the car, 22 January).
As the situation went on, the 39 degree day on Thursday 17 January, Kirby, with work-mate Daniel Evans, had to drop into the bank after work and told The Mail’s reporter there was no way his staffy Chev would be left in the car on such a hot day … even for a couple of minutes.
“I have a little daughter and I wouldn’t leave her in a car; you wouldn’t sit in a car yourself on a day like this, so why would you leave a dog in a car,” Kirby said.
“They can’t tell you if they’re hot, or need a drink … they rely on you,” he said.
“If we go somewhere, he’s with us … Chev goes everywhere with us, he comes to work and to the bank.”
