THE Yarra Glen C Grade cricketers know they will be in for a bit of sledging when they walk out against Kinglake on Saturday, 18 February, but they are up for it.
The team has signed on for The McGrath Foundation’s Pink Stumps Day and will be playing in the now familiar pink gear which has been instrumental in raising millions of dollars for breast cancer support and awareness.
The Yarra Glen boys can take heart in the fact that they are following in some impressive footsteps. Since 2009 Australia’s best cricketers have swapped their Aussie colours for the bright pink uniform as part of the Pink Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground each year.
The Yarra Glen Cricket Club is encouraging spectators to join their players and members to create their own sea of pink at Yarra Glen and to enjoy the special family day with them.
Club president John Orren lost his mother to breast cancer in 1998 and says most people know someone who has been through that sad experience.
βIt’s an opportunity for us to do something to help at a local level,β he said.
The cricket match starts at 1.30pm at Yarra Glen with some fun fundraising events carrying on after the game.
A pink shirt signed by all the players will be auctioned, one of the players will be having his head shaved β on the proviso his ‘supporters’ can come up with $500.
According to team captain Andrew Cowan, that’s a given. The hair will go!
There will be a spit roast, a catching competition and other activities for all the family.
When it comes to sledging, they say whatever comes their way, it is all in good fun, and for a good cause.
