Legend lights up yard

DAVE Richards was not the only Valley resident to enjoy some Australia Day backyard cricket and a barbecue with his friends and family.
But he was the only one to have footy legend Dermott Brereton as company.
Richards entered gardening tools manufacturer STIHL’s ‘This is My Backyard’ competition – to find the best backyards in Australia.
He was one of two Victorian winners – who each received a STIHL prize pack and game of hit-and-giggle with the former Hawthorn superstar.
“I entered the competition because I saw it on TV,” Richards said.
“I thought it was a great opportunity – I love my backyard.
“I was sitting at home on New Year’s Day and thought I’d have a crack at it.
“I didn’t expect to win but just thought I’d have a go.”
Richards confessed to not being “massively” into footy but said Brereton left a good impression.
“He’s a really great bloke,” he said.
“I think it’s just great to see a personality like him who’s not afraid to talk to people.
“He’s a true Aussie bloke and a definite backyard hero.”
Richards thought the distance from his Wandin North property might have played against him for the competition, but knew its picturesque surrounds were a plus.
“You just can’t beat it out here,” he said.
Brereton agreed.
“I’ve been out here before a few times – a little bit far from home,” he said. “I have been out here with Getaway.
“It’s great, a beautiful spot in the world.
“Last time I was in the hills, I went to a new ropes course in Belgrave and that was fantastic, I love it up here.
“Where I grew up outside Frankston, it was a semi-rural area so it’s similar. I feel quite comfortable up here.”
Brereton said he knew the Warburton Highway well, thanks to his friendship with former Collingwood fan-favourite, and Woori Yallock Football Club identity Damian Monkhorst.
“He’s a great bloke, the Big Monkey,” he said.
“And there’s a fair bit of him these days.
“He’s really put Woori Yallock on the map for me.”
