A Ringwood man was travelling towards Healesville on the Kooweerup Road when he told Healesville police that he swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle in his lane.
Healesville Police Acting Sergeant Matt McInnes said police were calling for witnesses to the crash, which occurred just after the bridge at Woori Yallock.
“Instead of having a head-on he (the driver) has chosen to go down the embankment,” he said.
Acting Sgt McInnes estimated a 40 to 50 metre drop where the car rolled several times before it landed in the Yarra River.
“He was very lucky to have escaped with the extent of injuries that he did,” he said.
Ambulance Victoria spokes-man Paul Bentley said the driver had managed to get out of the car and climbed up the embankment.
Mr Bentley said the man was taken to Maroondah Hospital with cuts and grazes.
“It sounds like he was incredibly lucky,” he said.
If anyone did witness the accident they are asked to contact Sen Const Chris Grasby at Healesville Police Station on 5962 4422 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
