DROWNING remains one of the largest causes of accidental death in Australia, but it needn’t be so according to swim school co-ordinator Sian Bentley.
“Drowning is preventable and by being aware of the safe ways to enjoy the water you and your family can help to reduce drowning statistics and have a safe, fun-filled summer,” said Ms Bentley who co-ordinates swimming lessons at Yarra Junction’s Yarrra Centre.
Ms Bentley said being aware of the swimming environment was a good start.
“Ensure you are aware of the conditions and safety rules of the water way you are intending to swim in and remember the conditions of the water one day can be completely different to the next,” she said.
It is never safe to swim alone is another critical piece of advice.
“No matter what age or skill level you have when it comes to swimming, being alone in water is never safe.
“Ensure that someone is always looking out for you and your children whether it is at the beach or a back yard pool, and never turn your back.”
She warned that a child can drown in a tiny amount of water and said drowning is often very quick and silent.
“Active supervision means constant visual contact with your child and keeping within arm’s reach at all times,” she said.
Learning to swim is another critical safeguard. “Being able to swim is an essential skill for life,” Ms Bentley said.
“It prepares children if they do find themselves in trouble around water. Not only does it provide them with basic skills to survive but more importantly teaches them to remain calm.”
The Yarra Centre runs swimming lessesons from babies to adults throughout the year.
