THE Monbulk Rangers women’s seniors and reserves were not just playing to win this week.
Both teams needed to continue to dominate the league and notch up another win. The brother of two squad members died last week, and the two players led their team out for a minute’s silence before the match.
The heart and determination of the Rangers side was clearly displayed in both matches, with the reserves defeating the University of Melbourne 2-1.
Monbulk started the game strongly, successfully bringing the ball to ground. An early goal from Nicky Cranston was the result of great work from the midfield through to the forwards.
But Melbourne did not give up easily and scored from a free kick near goal.
The pressure was on for the girls to dig deep and battle hard. They remained strong in defence throughout the match, keeping Melbourne Uni’s scoring chances to a minimum.
A quick break from the midfield in the last minute of the game saw Nicky Cranston score the winner as she calmly slotted the ball into the net.
The goal was met by a tremendous roar from the large crowd that had turned out to support the team in what was one of the most emotionally challenging games it will ever play. Alex Gardner was voted player of the match.
The women’s seniors also defeated the University of Melbourne 2-1.
The visitors scored first early in the second half, but Monbulk worked hard to come back to win, scoring both of its goals late in the game. Michelle de Boer and Alicia McKillen were the goal scorers. Rebecca Saber took out player of the match honours.
Monbulk is now sitting fourth on the ladder. It needs to finish in the top two to secure a promotion to the Premier League.
