ANOTHER YVMDFL season kicked off at the weekend with some exciting and close matches.
@BT Sport Sub Mail:DIVISION TWO
SENIORS
Yea travelled up to Alexandra for the Division Two seniors 2011 opener and spectators couldn’t have been happier. In a close game the two sides could barely be separated at each change, with both getting their nose in front several times. But in the end it proved to be Yea’s day because it was harder at the ball.
Yea 12.11 (83) d Alexandra 11.15 (81).
Goals – Yea: T. Butterworth, A. McKinna, J. Robinson 3, R. Adams 2, S. Martin. Alexandra: B. Kapakoulakis, T. Spinks, M. Bretherton, E. Hamill 2, L. Ware, K. Davis, Z. Heaslip.

Emerald looked to be on top throughout the entire match against Seville, leading at every change, but in the end its scarped home by the barest of margins. Its forward line seemed to have more structure than Seville’s, with the visiting team instead choosing to bomb the ball long.
Emerald 9.16 (70) d Seville 10.9 (69).
Goals – Emerald: J. Mather-Moore 4, N. Jansen, M. Livermore, D. Porter, M. Cox, D. Rout. Seville: S. Reece 3, M. Ekers 2, S. Wilson, B. Pereira, M. Kershaw, T. Eddy, M. Cecere.

Powelltown kicked five straight goals in the first quarter to be on target for a win against Yarra Junction.
But the visiting team had many more shots in front of goal than the home side and produced an excellent second quarter to turn things around. Despite its forwards’ inaccuracy, Yarra Junction was simply too good to control.
Yarra Junction 23.18 (156) d Powelltown 17.9 (111).
Goals – Yarra Junction: C. Hoare 7, D. Lever, B. Charman, T. Selby 3, T. Wheeler, N. Syme 2, J. Gates, H. Wadsworth, G. Healy. Powelltown: S. Robinson 5, D. Wilson 3, P. Miller, L. Darwall, L. Kinglake hosted Belgrave under lights on Saturday in a first for the league and despite the wet conditions, it was perfect for a twilight match.
Belgrave started the match well, putting its good pre-season form on show.
Kinglake was never far behind, turning the tables in the third quarter by keeping Belgrave to three goals.
The two teams provided highlights of what is to come in their future. Belgrave was simply too inaccurate in front of goal and Kinglake held on to win.
Kinglake 11.8 (74) d Belgrave 9.16 (70)
Goals – Kinglake: B. Styles, D. Pywell, R. Walsh, J. Demarco 2, B. Munn, R. Lock, F. Carlucci. Belgrave: K. Stasek, J. Boek 2, J. Meyer, B. Campbell, B. Fitzgerald, M. Hall, T. McNamara. @BT Sport Sub Mail:UNDER 18
This match was always going to be tough for Emerald and Seville came out firing. The visiting side was simply too strong and too fast for the home side to keep up, and much more accurate shooting for goal. Seville’s backline kept Emerald’s forwards in order, holding them to three goals for the match including a goalless final term.
Seville 11.23 (89) d Emerald 3.6 (24).
Goals – Seville: K. Tormey, D. Shore, M. O’Donnell 2, L. Nash, N. Sciortino, P. Harris, J. Shaw, J. Walsh. Emerald: L. McKenna 2, C. Thomsen.
Best – Seville: P. Harris, A. Behre, M. O’Donnell, B. Schembri, D. Shore, K. Tormey. Emerald: D. Cann, C. Thomsen, A. Thomson, R. Eccarius, S. Mills.
Yarra Junction looked poised to be on top from the first bounce.
The only blight on the visiting team’s win was kicking 3.9 in the second quarter, missing shots it shouldn’t have.
Powelltown trailed Yarra Junction at every break throughout the game and proved too strong.
Yarra Junction 15.15 (105) d Powelltown 12.8 (80)
Goals – Yarra Junction: H. Tindley-Roe, C. Spaulding 4, C. Kobiolke, J. Fall 2, J. Blackler, M. Kinsmore, S. Jackson. Powelltown: D. Sanders 9, T. Barker 3.
Best – Yarra Junction: J. Fall, C. Spaulding, E. Wadsworth, H. Tindley-Roe, Q. Hodgkinson, J. Blackler. Powelltown: D. Sanders, J. Battaglene, R. Goodinson, B. Kimpton, N. Moody, K. Walker.
Yea didn’t seem fazed by the fact that it wasn’t playing at home and fired out of the blocks, kicking 6.3 to 1.2 in the first quarter.
Despite the big lead at the first break, Alexandra fought back by keeping Yea to a single goal and kicking five to go into half-time only a goal down.
Yea got over the shock in the third term and went on to kick another six goals to Alexandra’s one to set up a comfortable win.
Yea 14.8 (92) d Alexandra 10.11 (71)
Goals – Yea: A. Martin, P. Evans 3, W. Graf, M. Sundblom 2, F. Bowles, T. Hammond, J. Crowe, J. Phelan. Alexandra: R. Loveday 4, L. Purcell 3, J. Newton 2, J. Gesler.
