HEALESVILLE Greyhound Association signed off on its long-serving grass track on Sunday 27, March, with a fun, family day for owners, trainers and the punters.
The greyhounds ran for the last time on grass with a $1.5million project about to start including a new sand track and spectator pavilion.
Among the highlights of the day was the announcement of the trainer and greyhound of the year which went to Garry Selkrig with Allowance. Another highlight was the mower race, a symbolic skit on what will become a thing of the past – the need for any sort of mower on the track.
Daniel Davis from Melton out dressed and out ran his competitors taking out the final of the mower series with a flying finish ahead of Barry Burl from Mooroolbark and Jason Formosa from Heathcote.
Organiser, Coldstream trainer Colin Dalton said the day was a great success with proceeds of the novelty events going to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
The $1.5million redevelopment is expected to be completed by the end of August in time for the running of the $40,000 Healesville Cup in September.
