A BUDDING young student is well on her way to becoming a successful artist.
A painting by Angelina Doolan, who attends Warooka Aboriginal College, has been chosen to represent the face of a new calendar.
Her painting is based on women’s Dreamtime, a traditional dot painting that shows all sorts of bush tucker such as bush onions and bush bananas.
It was on display at an exhibition in South Melbourne last year when the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Rights Commission were searching for an emerging young artist for a joint project with the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service.
VEORC Indigenous education and community engagement officer Holly Ireland said Angelina’s work stood out as a vibrant and colour piece of artwork.
Ms Ireland said the commission wanted to get involved in the legal service’s annual calendar and put together a collection of yarns from ‘unsung heroes’ – Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders who work tirelessly for their families and communities.
“It’s a good message to put alongside understanding human rights and being a good member of community,” she said. “The legal service and commission have similar values and complimentary services and the stories are examples of self determination and community strength.”
Angelina’s painting is featured on the front and back of the calendar, and throughout the middle. It has been sent out to indigenous communities across Victoria.
Angelina has been at Worawa for four years, but is originally from Amoonguna, an Aboriginal community 17 kilometres from Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
The 17-year-old comes from a family of talented artists, and she hopes to be involved in arts management with her local community arts centre when she returns home. Worawa College is showcasing some of their students’ works in an exhibition opening on Sunday 3 April from 2pm to 5pm at the Sandra Bardas Art Gallery at the College, 60-80 Barak Lane, Healesville.
The exhibition will be open for viewing from Monday 4 to Friday 8 April from 11am to 3pm.
