THE final shoot at the Woods Point Gun Club for the year had 26 shooters vying for the 19 hams and other Christmas prizes on offer.
Competition was keen but jovial as members finished the year with four novelty-type events, tricky but fun. The grounds looked a treat, freshly mown and as green as, well … grass.
The first event was 10 pair consisting of a hard crossing right to left target then an incoming target. Two targets, two shots only allowed. Laurie Poile won the first ham of the day with an excellent 20/22 followed by Tom Apps, 18/22, for the second place ham. Rob Bevis’s 17/22 gained him third place with Phillip Desmond taking fourth on 16/22.
The second event was the closest to a regular event. A Double Barrel Continental was skewed by making it a “points score” event shot from 18 metres. In the four grades the results were: AA – Anthony Kirley first, 38/45, Rob Kirley second, 17/45. A – Rob Bevis first, 42/45, Trevor Newman second, 41/45. Junior shooter Matt Woods took first place in B Grade, 39/45, followed by Peter West 36/45. Glen Coolahan was the lucky full ham winner in C Grade, 37/48 with Richard Brown taking the second place half ham, 34/48.
The third event was a handicap of sorts where the shooters started at the 11-metre mark then moved back two metres per shot to eventually end up at 25 metres.
Then the shooters moved forward two metres per shot from 25 metres to eventually end up back at 11 metres. Fifteen targets in all, but to add to the difficulty, the shooter scored more points for missing with the first shot then breaking the target with the second shot, but if they hit the target with the first shot and then managed to break a still flying piece of target with the second shot they received bonus points.
The shooters were graded into three groups according to their normal handicap.
Junior shooter Harry Ward won the 15 to 17 metre group ham, 22/45, Phil McDonough second 21/45. In the 18 to 20 metre group Ross Elstrek was first, 28/45, with Eddy Woods second 23/45. Mick Ward took the 21 to 25 metre ham with a score of 22/45, Rob Kirley second 20/45.
Ten pair of targets thrown from the opposite end of the shooting ground towards the shooter was event four. Again, two targets, two shots only.
Phillip Desmond at last managed to get his Christmas ham with 16/20 followed by Tom Apps in second place, 13/20. Mick and Harry Ward shot off for third and fourth with Harry winning third 17/26, to his Dad’s 16/26.
To finalise the day, all shooters who had not won any prizes at that point went into the ‘Poor Buggas’ shoot off for a ham. Steve Bedggood showed that he was the best of the worst by winning 8/8.
All shooters also received a bottle of wine each just for being brave enough to turn up.
The overall High Gun for the Christmas shoot was Rob Bevis 97/130. Tom Allen won the Junior High Gun, 73/130 while Jess Kirley won the achievement prize.
The 2010 yearly High Gun trophies donated by Dave Rosenhain were won by Mick Ward, Overall High Gun, with Tom Allen taking the 2010 Junior High Gun trophy.
The first shoot for 2011 is on Sunday 23 January at 11am.
