Rewarding fire duty

POLICE officers from Marysville, Kinglake, Woods Point, Alexandra and Warburton and SES volunteers from Marysville and Kinglake are among 33 people recognised by the Royal Humane Society Australasia for their bravery on Black Saturday.
The RHSA announced last week that the men and woman would receive medals in recognition of their actions during the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.
“The awards recognise selfless performance of duty where these courageous individuals have risked their lives to save the lives of others,” RHSA spokeswoman Sue Cutler said.
Police members to receive silver medals are Leading Sen Const Roger Wood and Sen Const Cameron Caine from Kinglake, LSC Ian Hamill from Alexandra, LSC Peter Collyer and Acting Sergeant Ian Thompson from Marysville and LSC Ken Dwight from Woods Point. Sgt Gregory Paul Bell of Warburton and LSC Peter Hamilton of Yarra Junction will receive bronze medals.
Marysville SES members Ian Bates, Josephine Hunter, Keith Ray and Jennifer Barton and Kinglake members Desmond Deas, Michele Moore and Ascher Derwent will also receive silver medals.
The Governor of Victoria will present the awards at a ceremony at Government House in October next year.
Ms Cutler said the RHSA is awaiting possible nominations from other agencies involved in Black Saturday, including the CFA and other SES units, and would also welcome nominations from the public for people who risked their lives to save others.
