BRUSH strokes and breakdancing may seem like an odd collaboration, but when artist Emma Johnson and breakdancer B Boy Sette get together it’s radically cool and super creative.
The pair will present a workshop as part of the Yarra Valley Arts 2011 Summer School Kids’ Art Program in January.
B Boy Sette will teach the kids breakdancing moves and Emma will lead them through a painting session in response to what they see, hear and feel.
“It’s about creating a picture using colour, symbols, shape and movement to capture different sounds, emotions, feelings and energy,” Emma explained.
B Boy loves the opportunity to see his moves appreciated in a different way.
“It gives me a chance to do my thing and just seeing the perception the kids have of what they see, and the colours they choose, is fantastic,” he said.
He said the different interpretations, with some kids drawing angles and being more interpretative, and others drawing what they see was “trippy.”
“They get very creative with what they see. I think they’re just going to draw what they see, but the kids really think outside the box sometimes and come up with something I would never expect,” he said.
The Arts For Kids program – which includes a range of music and arts activities – is held in conjunction with an extensive arts and music program for adults.
Among the more than 20 workshops planned for the adult program are pastel, watercolour, expressive figure drawing, digital photography and monoprinting, voice, string and wind, felting, crochet and jewellery.
Bookings are open for the 18th Summer School, which will run from 10 to 14 January at Healesville Primary School and St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School.
