PLANS are well underway for the second Marysville Marathon Festival.
Local GP and marathon runner Dr Lachlan Fraser initiated the marathon last year as a way of boosting morale in the community and attracting visitors to the fire-devastated town.
It worked … on both counts.
More than 2200 people finished the marathon events, and another 500 participated as unofficial strollers, walkers and runners. Many more enjoyed the festivities and the opportunity to both witness the devastation and the regeneration which was under way.
The RACV and the YMCA have come on board this year along with a number of other sponsors to support the event which is expected to be even bigger than 2009.
There is a course for everyone ranging from a gentle three kilometres and slightly more taxing 10-kilometre run or walk, to the half-marathon and marathon.
With the Melbourne Marathon such a success, organisers are looking forward to getting the registrations flowing for Marysville.
Around 200 people have entered to date and organisers are keen for participants to sign up early rather than on the day to avoid queues and to help with catering and other logistics – including having plenty of entertainment for families and participants.
All money raised will go towards local CFA, SES and King Billi Wildlife Reserve.
The Marysville Marathon Festival is on Sunday 7 November.
