UPWEY’S Steve Gannell snared seven wickets for just five runs as Belgrave was dismissed for 80 runs in their one-day game at the dome.
Gannell, who had the unenviable task of bowling the last over in the grand final last year, has certainly made a flying start to the season, taking 10 wickets already. Upwey closed out the game, finishing with 0/81 to comfortably take the points.
Ferntree Gully edged out newly promoted Footballers at Pickets Reserve.
Rob Bedford led the way for the Griffens with 61 but it was Luke Bowyer (59 not out and 3/12) who sealed the game for the Blues. Matt Black was also among the runs, scoring 42 with Andrew Tweedle the best bowler for Footballers.
Reigning premiers Johnson Park easily accounted for Monbulk, making 5/164 before removing Monbulk for 97. Peter Dunlop (45) and Bryn Gaunt (68) set up the win before Dulip Samaraweera and Liarn Desilva snared 7/21 between them.
The Basin recorded its first win of the season, restricting Rowville to 6/203 in pursuit of their 6/262. Lee and Heath both notched up scores of 80-plus and Koster chipped in with 40 for the Huntsmen.
The Hawks run chase was built on the back of Morsello’s 68. Searle and Heskes were the best performed bowlers for their respective teams.
Despite falling to 5/25, Upper Gully still managed to record a defendable total against Eildon Park.
The Kings’ innings was hampered by the bowling of Steve Pimm who took 5/25 after returning from England this week. However they recovered to finish their innings on 121. In reply the Pathers fell two runs short, and were dismissed for 119.
In the De Coite Shield Knoxfield had another strong performance defeating Mountain Gate. The game was decided by the slimmest of margins, as was the encounter between Knox Gardens and Lysterfield, which was fought out by the bowlers. St Johns Tecoma also overcame South Belgrave in a battle of the bats despite Travis Fedley’s best efforts.
