AN Upper Yarra Community House student was struck by a train at Mooroolbark station last week.
Police said the incident happened while a group of young people were mucking around on the platform of the station last Monday 23 August at 7.15pm.
Constable Andrew Howard said alcohol does appear to be a factor, but inquiries are still being made.
He said the situation was still unclear, but it looked like the 17-year-old man attempted to cross the tracks and mis-timed it, and he was clipped by a part of the train.
“He was pulled out from underneath the train by his friends; and paramedics, and the SES were on the scene quickly,” Const Howard said.
Intensive care paramedic Haley McCartin said when they arrived they found the 17-year-old conscious.
“He had serious injuries across a large area of his face…we also suspect that he suffered a head injury as he was quite confused,” Ms McCartin said.
“His neck was also put into a brace to keep it as still as possible in case he had suffered a spinal injury, and he was then taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition.”
Const Howard said police were looking at the station’s CCTV footage to determine what happened.
The young man was discharged from The Alfred later in the week.
