YARRA Valley residents are digesting Premier John Brumby’s decision on the Royal Bushfire Commission findings.
Many say they want immediate action taken to ensure new safety measures are up and running before the fire season.
Mr Brumby last week rejected the commission’s proposed buy-back scheme, but pledged the biggest increase in fuel reduction burns in history, increased arsonist surveillance, more cash for neighbourhood safer places, early warning systems and firefighters, and Fire Services Levy reform.
He also announced the 10/30 rule would remain in place until 1 March 2012.
Environment Minister Gavin Jennings said the Yarra Valley and Dandnenong Ranges were among priority areas for the burns and the target was a key to making Victoria safer from bushfires.
Mr Jennings said the cash would also fund monitoring and assessment programs.
“We will be working more closely with communities and groups affected by the burns, such as the tourism, wine and apiary industries to ensure there is limited impact to those important industries.”
