YOUNG Yarra Valley cricketers recently competed in an international tournament in Malaysia.
The Yarra Valley Cricket Association sent two teams to the Under 15’s KAF International Cricket Tournament in Kuala Lumpur when its first side was oversubscribed.
The second side was the Foundation of Goodness (FOG), a combined Australia/Sri Lanka team, which was brought together with players from the devastated Tsunami region of Seenigama, who wanted to defend the title won in the 2009 event.
A group of people from Melbourne’s East, who had witnessed the fantastic relationships that evolved out of the cricket in 2009, fundraised to send not only the Sri Lankan players, but players from the Yarra Valley, Ferntree Gully and Casey district teams.
The Foundation of Goodness efforts have been directed to the Seenigama area since the damaging tsunami in December 2004.
Foundation of Goodness trustee and world record holder Muttiah Muralitharan will spend more time with the young players following his retirement from test cricket.
The tournament has been running for four seasons and is used to bring Under 15 players from around the world to assist with the development of junior cricket in Malaysia.
Teams from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Australia and local cricket clubs from the states of Malaysia have been competing with friendly rivalry for the KAF Cup.
