Tales bring many new lessons in life

NUMERACY and Literacy week (29 August to 3 September) will not pass without celebration at Healesville High school.
Students and teachers will be hearing wonderful stories from each other and some guests to the college.
“Communicating by story allows experience, circumstance and perspective to be passed on,” said Susie McNabb, the school’s teaching and learning coach.
“The stories will used as a springboard for writing. By listening and then writing about these tales, students will learn from real life. This suits the theme for the week, Learning for Living,” Ms McNabb said.
To celebrate the Numeracy part of the week, some maths students will be involved in a national data gathering event called “Reach for the Stars”.
“It’s physical and fast – a four-way shuttle relay is timed,” Ms McNabb explained.
The aim is for the class or group to get faster and faster over rounds lasting two, four and six minutes.
All the results are collected via the web from across Australia. The national results will be returned to the student for further analysis.
Older students will be involved technology-based games that refine and practice their Mathematics.
“It’s a great way to learn,” Ms McNabb said.
