ALL eyes this weekend were on Warburton player Scott Muir to see if he could boot 10 goals to reach the magical 100. Unfortunately for Scott, Warburton didn’t muster 10 goals for the day even though he did produce four of his team’s nine goals.
There wasn’t much in this game for the entire day, with no more than two goals separating the sides. Warburton kicked the only two goals of the first quarter in a scrappy opening but it was Monbulk that produced a six-goal-to-three second term to take an 11-point lead into half-time.
The second half was a hard-fought affair with both teams desperate to finish with a win. Despite Warburton trying valiantly to wrestle back the lead, it was Monbulk that hung on to the narrow lead at the final siren.
Monbulk 11.11 (77) d Warburton Millgrove 9.5 (59).
Best – Monbulk: Adam Gee, Luke McCormick, Chris Mitchell. Warburton Millgrove: Liam Barnard, Carl Morgan, James Iacono.
MOUNT Evelyn got off to a great start with six goals to two in the first quarter for a 25-point lead.
The second quarter was a beauty with 13 goals scored but it was Mount Evelyn that had the better of it with eight and a 44-point half-time lead.
Olinda came out for the third with more accountable football and clawed their way back to within striking distance after a six-goal-to-three quarter that reduced the margin to 26 points at the last change.
Olinda kept coming at the Mounters in the last quarter and did outscore its opponents four goals to three to fall short by 20 points.
The sides will meet again next week in an elimination final.
Mount Evelyn 20.15 (135) d Olinda Ferny Creek 17.13 (115)
Best – Mount Evelyn: Chris Haworth, Benjamin Farrugia, Michael Smith. Olinda Ferny Creek: Owen Millwood, Garrett McDonald, Owen Raszkiewics.
SILVAN virtually kicked itself out of the game in the first quarter when it booted 4.10. Healesville had only four scoring shots but ended the quarter with 3.1, which kept them in touch.
It showed the importance of straight kicking in the second quarter as it played one of its best quarters for the season, producing 10.4 to Silvan’s 1.2.
All of a sudden the margin had blown out to 41 points.
Silvan did have plenty of chances in the second half but its inaccuracy haunted the team for the entire day while Healesville’s accuracy was the reason for its 45-point victory.
Healesville 20.8 (128) d Silvan 10.23 (83).
Best – Healesville: Sam Turner, Ashley Hamer (six goals), Simon Gordon (five). Silvan: Stephen Andrews, Jake Straughair, David Bissels.
UPWEY was always expected to beat Wandin but it had to fight tooth and nail for the victory in a game that never really reached any great heights but it was an enthralling encounter all the same because of the hardness of the contest.
After an even first quarter with Wandin leading by just a point, it was Upwey that slowly got on top but by no means in complete control. It led by just 15 points at the last change and an upset was a distinct possibility.
Upwey did hold off a gritty Wandin side that should be big improvers next year.
Upwey Tecoma 14.7 (91) d Wandin 10.9 (69)
Best – Upwey Tecoma: Steven Brotja, Blair Sheppard, Sam Waters. Wandin: Tom Goodwin, David Crellin, Mathew Peterson.
WOORI Yallock will go into the finals with great confidence after finishing the season on top and beating second-placed Gembrook by 37 points.
Woori held just a nine-point lead at half-time and a great second half looked likely. But Woori then booted five goals to Gembrook’s one to stretch the lead to 34 points.
The last quarter was a non-event as neither side scored a major, which didn’t concern Woori as it ended up running out comfortable, if not convincing, winners.
Woori Yallock 10.14 (74) d Gembrook Cockatoo 5.7 (37)
Best – Woori Yallock: Patrick Sharp, Tom van Veen, Dallas Spencer. Gembrook Cockatoo: Craig Clarke, Shannon Richardson, Shane Williams.

The last quarter was a battle of the backlines but it was Junction’s that stood tall to finish the day with a terrific 18-point win.

With Kinglake leading by 55 points at the last change the result had been determined, but Thornton did fight on to outscore Kinglake in the last quarter.

THE qualifying final was a real slog in the first half with both sides finding it hard to score. Yarra Glen booted three goals in the first quarter to Emerald’s two but the second quarter was the battle of the backlines with neither side scoring a goal.
At half-time it was Yarra Glen by seven points. Then Yarra Glen played an inspired third quarter booting five goals to Emerald’s two for a handy four-goal lead into the last quarter.
With goals hard to come by Emerald couldn’t bridge the gap with both teams kicking two goals in the final term to see Yarra Glen run out four-goal winners.
Yarra Glen now meets Seville for the right to play in the grand final while Emerald gets another chance against Kinglake.
Yarra Glen 10.9 (69) d Emerald 6.9 (45)
Best – Yarra Glen: Ben Ashton, Sean Baeath, Hayden Devanny. Emerald: Mathew Dompietro, Adam McGrath, Brody Stephenson.
KINGLAKE started the better in the elimination final but didn’t punish Alex on the scoreboard, booting 2.4 to Alex’s one behind in the opening term.
Alex kicked two goals to one in the second quarter to get within seven points at half-time and the game was up for grabs.
Both teams booted just one goal in the third term and the closeness of the scores made this an enthralling encounter. It was Kinglake that finally strung a couple of majors together and showed just a little more poise than Alexandra to eventually run out 23-point winners.
Kinglake 8.7 (55) d Alexandra 4.89 (32)
Best – Kinglake: John Burns, Jacob Styles, Daniel Coburn. Alexandra: Zachary Vincent, Bart Wallace, Sam Woollard.
