Your TFN is for life!
Can’t find your TFN?
YOU can change jobs, change partners, change your name, change your religion even, but your tax file number (TFN) is yours for life.
If you leave the country and come back to Australia, you still use the same TFN.
You will find your nine-digit TFN on your income tax notice of assessment, any correspondence from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and on a payment summary, for example from an employer.
If you have a tax agent, they will be able to tell you your TFN.
If all of the above fails and you still can’t find your TFN, contact the ATO.
Be prepared. There will be “privacy issues”. The ATO need to know that they are talking to the correct person before they can discuss anyone’s tax affairs, so they will ask for details only you or your authorised representative would know.
