A GROUP of dedicated residents have joined together to Keep Woori Yallock Beautiful.
They have formed a Tidy Towns committee to work towards the beautification of the town.
Committee president Val Shaw believes, with a bit of help, residents can be proud of their town again.
“Many years ago I was in the tidy town committee in Woori and we won a Tidy Town award in 1990,” she said.
“I was talking to some friends and said Woori looks a bit sad and we could do with some tidy towning, and they all agreed.”
Mrs Shaw said there was currently no strong community group to keep things moving along in Woori Yallock.
“These people are very committed, long-time residents and we want to let everyone know what we’re about and join us if they’re interested in helping,” she said.
Mrs Shaw said the committee had a series of projects to improve the area, including general rubbish removal and cleaning up along the highway.
A longer-term project they would like to take part in is the improvement of the Harold Ockeral Reserve.
“It has a few picnic tables and trees, and a tourist information sign that needs replacing,” she said.
“We need to get a plan drawn up of what we want to do in the area, some nice planting, and extra parking along the edge of the road for caravans.”
The committee would also like to remove the town’s bent flagpole from the traffic lights on Warburton Highway, and replace it in the reserve with a proper base and monument to hold ceremonies.
Residents who would like to see Woori Yallock beautified are invited to a public meeting at 7pm on Monday 13 September at Woori Yallock Community House.
Keep Australia Beautiful week will be held from Monday 23 August to Sunday 29 August and will focus on Out and About recycling to help reduce litter and recyclable waste unnecessarily being sent to landfill.
