Shooters take aim at games

THE Melbourne Gun Club in Lilydale is offering a taste of what’s to come at the Commonwealth Games clay target shooting events in October.
From March 26 to 28 the club will host the second of three eliminations to pick the Commonwealth Games shooting team for New Delhi. The event will also be the decider for selection of the World Championship team to go to Munich.
“It looks like being the biggest shooting competition the club has had since hosting the 2006 Commonwealth Games,” club junior vice-president and 2008 Olympic competitor Craig Henwood said.
Lining up with Henwood next weekend will be Olympic gold medallists Russell Mark (1996), Michael Diamond (1996 and 2000) and Suzy Balogh (2004), as well as bronze medallists Adam Vella (2004) and Deserie Baynes, then known as Huddleston (1996).
Also taking part will be Olympic contenders Stacy Roiall (2008), Tom Turner (2004), George Barton (2004 and 2008), Clive Barton (2000) and David Cunningham (1996 and 2000).
The club is opening its doors to spectators – clay target enthusiasts or members of the general public keen to see what the sport is all about – for what promises to be a highly competitive display of shooting.
“This is a chance to see Australia’s and the world’s best shooters in action right in the Yarra Valley, and free of charge,” Henwood said.
Competition starts on all three days from 10am.
