Bats hold up under heat

By Keith Thompson, YVCA secretary
A LATE burst of energy was required by the players on Saturday, as it warmed up during the afternoon.
It was also better to be batting than bowling, if your captain made the right call, this first day of Round 10 in the D. J. Strachan Shield.
In a local derby Silvan batted first at home to Mount Evelyn and at stumps were eight down for 264cc.
Clint Sharman lead the way with a fine 70, Jason Lovell continued his steady season’s cricket with 42, while Kane Jones with 3/49 was best for Mount Evelyn.
Wandin were none for 22, at close of play, after dismissing Healesville for 186.
Steve James 42 and Darren Edwards not out for 36, were the better scores in a slightly disappointing Healesville batting display.
The Wandin attack was lead by Wayne Ross 4/55 and Jackson Wright 2/47.
Seville made the most of winning the toss at home and batted first reaching 10/317 at the end of play.
John Pingataro made an undefeated 125 and was assisted by Garth Woodford 28 and Tim Dwyer 28.
The best bowlers for Woori Yallock were Ben Hayes 3/60 and Andrew Sharp 3/81.
Woori Yallock also has the batting strength to reach the tally on the reasonably fast Seville outfield.
At Warburton the visitors, Coldstream, batted first but – with an excellent spell of spin bowling from Cam Darwall taking 6/22 – they were dismissed for 162 with Scott Reece being the backbone with a score of 54.
Warburton Millgrove is 3/78 (Scott Darwall 37) and it will take another fine bowling performance in the match from a Coldstream player next Saturday if they are to get the points in this round.
Gruyere District, at home, batted first and at day’s end were all out for 254 (G. Sweeten 53, N. Hunter 43, David Lever 8/111 off 29 overs, Q. Hodgkinson 1/6).
Yarra Junction will bat on day two with a reasonable target to chase down – this one could go either way.
The R. A. Finger Trophy competition is still a hotly contested competition for ladder positions.
Second placed Healesville made 259 all out with Richard Maile 55, B. Dolan 47, Mark Powell 38, Alan Pearce 25 not out.
The leading bowlers for Yarra Glen were John Orren 3/41, Cowan 2/18 and Fordham 2/38.
Yarra Junction, at home, hosted neighbour Warburton-Millgrove who batted first but could only manage a total of 154 (Steve Darwall 49, Jeremy Lewis 37, K. Colling 3/44, D. Robertson 3/17 and J. Fall 2/29 sharing the spoils for Yarra Junction).
Seville has 223 on the board against Woori Yallock (Philip Smith 45, Shane (Cameo) Senior 54).
Coldstream, at home, totalled 183 runs in the first innings with Nathan Cuthbertson 76 not out and D. Ralph 30.
For Wandin, Bren Johnson bowled one of his best season’s spells, taking the great figures of 6/26.
Wandin have not been travelling well with the bat all season so Coldstream’s 183 will be defendable if they bowl well.
The C Grade 1 match of the round is the Bushfire Memorial Match between Marysville and Kinglake, at Marysville.
The home side, Marysville, batted first and were dismissed for 191 (R. Hodgins 55, L. Ronalds 28, L. Ware 22, and a great score from extras with 30).
For Kinglake John McKenry bowled well with 10 overs, five maidens, 3/16, Zac Coleman 2/49, Jason Gaffee 2/49, Brenton Styles 1/21 and Ben Munn-Gibbs 1/34.
In reply at stumps Kinglake were 2/27 with Matthew Howard 17 not out, and with him at the crease, Zac Coleman seven not out.
Powelltown 10/130 (K. Dunne 29 not out, Mark Cornford 3/17, Al Crowhurst 2/19, P. Wellins 2/28).
In reply Silvan was 4/84 (A. Crowhurst 30 not out, K. Dunne 2/15).
Gruyere District all out 211 (B. Hunter 47, Neil Waixel 30, Michael Young 4/42) with Launching Place in reply at close of play on 1/39 – the game is still either side’s match to win.
Hoddles Creek with 50 runs on the board and all 10 wickets still in play have the better place in the match against Mount Evelyn who have been dismissed for 108 (M. Whitehead 76 not out, A. Davis 5/38).
