Underhill puts bite on Sharks

By Steve Brown
THE Basin Huntsmen put the bite on the Johnson Park Sharks in the one-day game after the Christmas break.
Basin’s Josh Lee topscored with 40 and 29 to each of the Heskes brothers helped register 152 after 42 overs. But the Huntsmen regrouped after the tea break and quickly had the visitors reeling at 5/19 from 14 overs.
Alex Winters dismissed the association’s top bat, Bryn Gaunt caught behind for two, then had former Test cricketer Dulip Samaraweera caught for a duck and the day got worse for the Sharks.
Outswing bowler Shane Underhill continued the onslaught and captured 4/15 in a great display of controlled one-day bowling and the Park was knocked over for 48, the lowest score of the season.
Upper Gully was too strong in the end for an undermanned Lysterfield after the Kings put 200 on the board.
Leg spinner Alister Lord showed his all-round ability with 44 while in reply Lysterfield fell 29 runs short on 171 with Matt Whitty impressing with 35.
Belgrave inflicted more heartache on Eildon Park, which after playing off in last year’s final, is at the wrong end of the ladder with the same team line-up. The Magpies compiled 233 with Leigh Newey (76) and Ben Carnell (70) doing the damage. In reply the Panthers were just short with 8/219, despite a fighting knock of 94 from Shane Cosstick. St Johns Tecoma caused the upset of the year when it downed finals contender Upwey by seven runs.
Former Upwey player Corey Walters had the last laugh when he collected 5/20 against his old club and Jason Newman was at the crease in the end with an unbeaten 66.
Darren Spence scored a half century for the Tigers despite receiving a nasty blow to the nose and his team went away empty-handed after pencilling the game in for a win.
Blake Walter (55) steered Monbulk (155) to victory over fourth placed Rowville (147) with Nathan Bogar topscoring for Rowville with 61 and Ferntree Gully had an easy day when it toppled Knox Gardens for 83 with part-time spinner Shane Richardson taking four wickets.
The Gully batted time out to reach 5/212 with Country Week hopeful Luke Bowyer dominating with 69 not out.
