By Keith Thompson,
SATURDAY saw the completion of round six in the YVCA senior cricket fixture with the main D. J. Strachan Shield competition getting very interesting as Mount Evelyn completed a convincing win over Woori Yallock.
Mount Evelyn continued their innings after dismissing Woori Yallock for 74 with Andrew Sharp on 31, Chris Anderson 4/27 and Kane Jones 4/39. Mount Evelyn were all out for 327 with Andrew Giblin on 94 and Kane Jones also making runs while Nathan Ward with 3/51was the best with the ball for the Woori Yallock team.
Yarra Junction could only manage 70 in 48 overs on the first day, with Stephen Flutter on 27, David Lever 18, John Pignataro 5/30 and Ishara Amarasingne 4/16, and needed a stellar performance to win against Seville.
Even though Seville batted extremely slowly, being 5/217 at stumps, of course such a low score proved impossible to defend with Andrew Kay on 66, Garth Woodford 53, Leigh Aitkens 32 and David Lever 2/22.
Warburton-Millgrove were160 with Liam Barnard on 45, Adam Humphrey 45, Simon Young 4/63, Paul Grayling 2/10 and Wayne Ross 2/37. They lost to Wandin with 257 all out, including a fine display of batting from captain John Aumann who led the way with 102. He was assisted by Wayne Ross on 33 and Justin Mays 46, M. Waler 2/53, Cameron Darwell 2/41 and Adam Humphrey 2/20.
Silvan were 9/236 with Jason Lovell on 104* and Nathan Cuthbertson 4/74, proving too strong for Coldstream who were 9/82 all out. Following on they were 1/164cc with C. Gannell 108*, A. Evans 50*, some improved batting from the Coldstream side which should give them confidence as they go into the long break with the bye in round seven.
Hoddles Creek on 118 lost to Healesville 227 and 2/55 with Daniel Edwards 47, N. Harbe 47, Scott Simmonds 2/44 and S. Williams on 2/25.
In the R. A. Finger Trophy round six matches Seville at home made 8/319cc, Matthew Brooke-Walker on 161*, Stu Sculthorpe 29 and Luke Campbell-Dury 3/71, and defeated Wandin outright 10/97 with Matthew Brooke-Walker on 5/10.
In Wandin’s second innings they were all out on 68 with G. Gosland on 35, Matthew Brooke-Walker 6/25 and Phil Smith 3/10.
Healesville was all out for 156 with Richard Maile on 36, James Shambrook 25, Dan Lever 3/17, playing Yarra Junction, 4/67. No further information supplied.
Woori Yallock on 204 with Julian Smith 78, A. Tazzyman 47, John Holland 4/20, defeated Yarra Glen all out for 87 with Mi. Jollie 3/22, Adam Dunn 3/ 37. No further scores relayed.
Coldstream on 8/206, with Craig Robertson on 39 and Trevor Ottrey 5/37 defeated Warburton all out 185 with Steve Darwall on 61, Brad Taylor 36, T. Kelly 30, Rod Brown 23, D. Ralph 6/49 and Paul Harris 2/23.
In the C Grade one game of the round, Kinglake on 178 were all out with James Morgan on 86, Aaron Westworth 30, Cameron Charter 16, Jason DeVisor 5/66 and N. Lawlor on 2/46, lost to Hoddles Creek 9/183cc, with Luke Herrington on 51*, Glen Derix 35, Bruce Davis 16, sundries 33, Gaffee 20-4-39-4, Zac Coleman 14-1-29-2, Brenton Styles 22-1-65-2. The match was won by Hoddles Creek in the last over by five runs.
With one round to go before the two-week Christmas break but with plenty of cricket during the holidays with Junior Country Weeks, senior national championships and the like, the YVCA senior grade teams will all be looking for wins to go to that break with confidence.
The D. J. Strachan Shield round seven match-ups has Healesville v Mount Evelyn as the match of the round.
To tip this is not easy but with Kane Jones playing well with both bat and ball he alone weighs the scale in Mount Evelyn’s favour.
Gruyere District came off the bye to host Wandin in a local derby. Wandin after a good win in round six will go in with great confidence. If Matt Tilney, however, has a day out he could turn the match in the home side’s favour; otherwise Wandin to win.
Warburton will host Seville which, after two wins in a row has confidence greater than in previous seasons. Warburton’s Darwall brothers can easily create a spell of bowling that can set up a match as can the new ball group at Seville in Pignataro and Amarasingne.
Woori yallock coming off a low with a loss and Silvan on a high after another great win should see a good match. One would have to tip Woori Yallock however, as it would not seem likely that they would fail so badly again with the bat.
Hoddles Creek will host neighbours Yarra Junction in what will be a good tussle. Hoddles Creek need good performances from the Derix brothers, while the Lever brothers will need to play well to help the Eagles.
Yarra Junction versus Healesville should be the match of the round in the RAFT with Healesville a slight favourite while in the C Grade one fixture, the main game will be between Launching Place United and Marysville at Wickhams Road.
