COLDSTREAM Brewery was an inspired location for a series of workshops aimed at bringing men together post bushfires.
An average of 15 men from around the Yarra Valley and Toolangi took part in the two hour Men Can Cook workshops with chef Scott Arthur providing the focal point – good food prepared simply.
The workshops were part of the Yarra Ranges Council bushfire recovery program.
Toolangi sawmiller Gary Demby lost much of his Toolangi mill in the fires, which also came close to their family home.
He said while people did share their experiences of the fires, there was lots of talk about other things.
“It helps to talk, but sometimes you just want to change the subject and get on with it,” he said.
As someone who is handy with the barbecue tongs, can carve a good spit roast and has a good record with pancakes, Mr Demby said he enjoyed the opportunity to learn a few ‘tricks of the trade’
Yarra Ranges Council community development officer, and Chum Creek resident, Lou Sbalchiero, said the program provided an informal opportunity for men to talk and was a lot of fun.
“Having it at the brewery made it of more interest than perhaps having it at a TAFE or community centre and provided an atmosphere which made it fun for guys to be there,” he said.
Mr Arthur also enjoyed the opportunity to pass on some insider information to a group he said came with an open attitude and a willingness to try new things.
Another series is planned for January with the focus on brewing beer.
More information on that program is available from the Yarra Ranges Council Bushfire Recovery Team on 1300 368 333.
