Sizzling scores for shield matches

By Keith Thompson, YVCA secretary

THE warm weather brought out the best in many players in D. J. Strachan Shield on Saturday but Silvan, at home to Warburton-Millgrove, could not make the most of their bowling stint.
Silvan 10/245 to Warburton-Millgrove (no result recorded) with Brent Summers 73, Luke Darwell 78, A. Crowhurst 3/43 and Sean Waliker 3/59.
In the match at Hoddles Creek the home side were all out for just 111 runs but in an extremely tight encounter this was enough to defeat Coldstream who were two runs short at all out for 109, with Chris Dobson on 32 being the leading batsman while Brenton Derix bowled well taking 4/28. Hoddles Creek has a second innings and were 0/42 at the close of play.
At home, Wandin 261 proved too strong for Yarra Junction which was dismissed for 201, with David Lever undefeated on 70 and his brother Daniel Lever on 32. Jackson Wright with 6/53 did wonderfully well for the home side and he was assisted by Scott Hasan with 2/39.
Mount Evelyn closed overnight at 6/193 declared with A. Giblin 105, S. Kogelman 32, A. Violi 2/21, R. Prouse 2/31. Gruyere District was asked to start its second innings after being all out for 69. Gruyere in the second innings was 7/134 cc with Luke Sarre 37, Aaron Violi 29, Kane Jones 5/41, A. Giblin 2/30. It was a fine win to Mount Evelyn and a well toughed-out day by Gruyere to avoid the outright.
Healesville were at home to Woori Yallock and got a score of 9/268 on the board with Nick Foster 80, Darren Edwards 43 and Ben Slater 62; while for the Tigers, Steggles on 3/58 and Wallace 2/40 ensured that Woori Yallock’s score of 282 was not overtaken.
In the R. A. Finger Trophy, Woori Yallock on 136 with Michael Davern 5/50, Brad King 28, defeated Healesville 111 with Sam Watts 51 not out and Adam Dunn 4/37. Woori Yallock’s second innings of 7/192cc saw Brad king 132* and R. Haub on 4/46.
Warburton-Millgrove were all out for 105. Steve Darwall on 40 led the way while Jon Woods bowled very well to take 6/34. When Yarra Glen took its turn to bat they also were dismissed for 105 with A. Cowen on 35, Brad Taylor 3/8, and Yarra Glen’s second innings 6/69cc, thus the match was tied.
Seville with 3/403cc on the board on the first week were looking to complete the win early but Coldstream defended stoically until just after tea before being dismissed for 73 with B. Comben 30 not out, Scott Rackham 3/16. On being asked to bat again at stumps Coldstream were 5/58 with Paul Harris 41 and Scott Rackham 3/14.
Next weekend will have the main matches in Strachan Shield, with Seville hosting Wandin. Recent form would suggest that Wandin will go into the game favourite but Seville will be looking to work hard to defeat their neighbours, Wandin’s attack or Jackson Wright, Simon Young and Scott Hasan will certainly cause the Seville batting some concerns.
Healesville will host Yarra Junction at Queens Park and will be looking to have a win after last round’s loss to Woori Yallock. Yarra Junction will again look to the Lever brothers for leadership and it seems to hard to pick a winner here.
Other matches are Coldstream hosting Mount Evelyn with Mount Evelyn clearly the pick with Andrew Giblin batting well and Kane Jones also having a great season with both bat and ball. Gruyere will host Silvan, which could be anyone’s match; and at Woori Yallock the home side should be too strong for Hoddles Creek.
