ON a day when one could confidently have expected to see an ancient, bearded man building a large floating craft, the annual Emerald v Olinda challenge took place.
It was a stableford event where the winning team was the one with the better points average.
At the soggy close of play, the Olinda team prevailed with an average of 31 points to Emerald’s 27.
This proved that the Olinda crew were much better suited to playing solid golf and an ability to complete a sodden round to the 18th hole.
Training on top of Mt Dandenong was quite an advantage.
Emerald had seven players who did not finish while Olinda got the entire mob home with completed rounds.
On the individual level, Kameron Geeves (16) was the master of the day, by heaps, when his 41 points topped the entire field and, of course, B Grade.
Ken Hill (12) was king of the A Graders again when his 35 points were enough.
David Aitken (27) topped the C Grade list with 37 points.
Of the others, John Carvill, Phil Wilkin and Steve Town all had 36, Wayne Parsonage 35 while Bruce Williams, John Ellerbrook and Gary Westbrook all came in with 34.
When it came to nearest the pins, Alistair Hopkins was nearest on the 4th, Ian Scott on the 7th, nobody did the trick on the 12th, Steve Pryde on the 13th and Bruce Camm picked up the pro pin cash on the 18th.
Gary Westbrook was closest after two shots on the 10th and Steve Pryde managed the same trick on the 17th.
The women’s competition was won by a saturated Shireen Fergus with 34 points, from Lyn Ward on 34.
On Wednesday’s Officially Fantastic Golf (OFG) using OFG handicaps, Ken Hill (12) won with 36 points from Dennis Fuller (4) and Leigh Morison (14) who both had 30 points. Moss Fuller won the bocce on the 19th hole.
Next Saturday is the September VGL medal competition so the real golf games will be out on show, or not.
