THE 2009 DRJFL grand finals at Woori Yallock on Sunday attracted one of the largest crowds seen in recent years for a junior grand final.
It’s a sign, according to league president Doug Evans, that reflects the growing popularity of the sport, and the stand the league has taken in recent years to make it family-friendly.
“In the main the day went very well,” Mr Evans said. He was obviously disappointed that a brawl which broke out between the Under15 Wesburn and Upwey-Tecoma teams, spoiled the day for many.
He praised the sportsmanship however of the clubs who took to the oval and played strong, hard and fair football.
Yarra Valley teams competing for premiership honours were Yarra Glen in the Under 11s, Healesville v Woori Yallock in the Under 13s, and Wesburn in the Under 15s.
On Yarra Glen’s first premiership in more than 20 years Mr Evans he said it had been a great victory which augered well for the club. “They had two teams in the finals and one taking out a grand final victory, so the future of that club looks very bright,” he said.
