Alex goals, at last!

By Stephen Walter
ALEXANDRA was held goalless last week and last Saturday at quarter-time against Gembrook Cockatoo the team was struggling again, with a 32-point deficit. The second quarter saw Alexandra get its first goal for five quarters and outscore the opposition three goals to one.
However, the second half was all Gembrook as it ran away with the game, kicking nine goals to one to finish with a workmanlike victory. Gembrook Cockatoo 15.11.101 d Alexandra 5.6.36
Best: Alexandra: Hill, Bretherton, Duigan. Gembrook: Williams, Clark, Clarke.
NEITHER Healesville nor Seville had been in great form of late and it showed in this game. Silvan started the better holding a two-goal lead at quarter-time before Healesville hit back and at half-time Silvan held just a one-point lead.
Silvan lost its run in the third quarter and Healesville took full advantage as it booted 5.3 to Silvan’s three behinds. Healesville kicked another three in the final term to Silvan’s two for a comfortable win. Healesville 10.18.78 d Silvan 7.6.48.
Best: Healesville: Plozza, Hamer, Barclay. Silvan: Norman, Newell, Ripepi.
MONBULK’S great win was set up with a 5.6 to 1.3 first quarter. Its Michael Langworthy (six goals) and Mark Mullinder (four) were in fine form in this entertaining game with 19 separate goal kickers for the day (10 from Monbulk, nine from Mount Evelyn).
Even though it was a large margin Mt Evelyn was excellent in patches and should learn from the game. Monbulk 22.19.151 d Mt Evelyn 13.7.85.
Best: Monbulk: Gee, Mullinder, White. Mt Evelyn: Williams, Dalton, Martin.
QUARTER-TIME saw Upwey and Wandin with two goals apiece but Upwey holding a five-point lead. The second quarter belonged to Upwey, with 7.4 to Wandin’s inaccurate eight behinds.
After the long break it was one-way traffic. Upwey had multiple avenues to goal as it booted 14.12 in the second half to Wandin’s 1.3 to keep up its impressive form. Upwey Tecoma 23.22.160 d Wandin 3.12.30.
Best:Upwey: Hedge, Brotja, Orger. Wandin: Bartling, Crossland, Lang.
WOORI Yallock proved it was not to be taken lightly, despite being 28 points behind Warburton Millgrove at quarter-time. But what a difference another term made.
Warby failed to score as Woori booted 6.5 for a 41-point turnaround and a 13-point lead going into half-time.
An even second half saw Woori kick six goals to Warby’s five. Woori Yallock 14.11.95 d Warburton Millgrove 11.9.75.
Best: Woori Yallock: Bonuda, Sharp, Schroth. Warburton: T. Walker, M.Walker, Swankie.

HALF-TIME saw Olinda with a 10-goal lead and looking at another 100-point-plus victory, with Dylan Troutman best afield with five goals. Byt the second half was much more even with Belgrave taking it right up to its more-fancied opponents. Olinda did outscore Belgrave but by only 11 points. Olinda Ferny Creek 21.17.143 d Belgrave 11.5.71.
Best:Olinda: Troutman, P. Rosier, M. Rosier. Belgave: Fitzgerald, Meyer, Bilston.
EMERALD got off to a good start for a 28-point lead at quarter-time. Yea hit back 4.4 to four behinds in the second for Emerald to take a four-point lead into half-time. It looked like a close one but it ended up being anything but. Emerald in the second half booted 13, eight in the third, to Yea’s 3. Emerald 18.13.121 d Yea 8.6.54.
Best:Emerald: Cusworth, Geddes, Hellriegel. Yea: Evans, Connell, Graham.
KINGLAKE against Seville was second versus third, with only percentages separating them. After only one goal each by quarter time, Kinglake adapted to the conditions a lot better than Seville with David McMahon and Chris Watkins giving their forwards plenty of opportunities. Seville managed only another three goals after quarter-time as Kinglake added 12 to run out comfortable winners. The Lakers now take on Olinda next week. Kinglake 13.11.89 d Seville 4.5.29.
Best:Kinglake: McMahon, Watkins, Wearne. Seville: Tanner, Wilson, Pahi.
POWELLTOWN chalked up its second victory of the season with a hard-fought 16-point win over Yarra Glen. There was little in this game going into the final quarter with Yarra Glen up one point. But Powelltown impressed with its six-goal final term. Powelltown’s Chris Betka booted six with good support from Barry McDonald (four). Powelltown 15.11.101 d Yarra Glen 12.13.85.
Best:Powelltown: Camilleri, Muller, Cornish. Yarra Glen: Hocking, Watt, Roberts.
THORNTON-EILDON once again lost a close one and could blame it on its lacklustre first half of only 1.7 against Yarra Junction’s 7.5. The Boners outscored Junction four goals to one in the last but it was never going to be enough.
Yarra Junction 12.6.78 d Thornton Eildon 8.12.60.
Best: Yarra Junction:Clarke, Wheeler, Lees. Thornton: Kapakoulakis, Musgrove, Creighton.
