80 years of pride for Belcoma club

By Tania Martin
BELCOMA Netball Club is calling on all past and present players to help celebrate its 80th birthday.
The club is hosting a party at the Cuckoo Restaurant in Olinda to mark the occasion later this month.
Belcoma first started in 1929 as a Belgrave-based club, which travelled with the local footballers to play on courts near the footy field.
But in 1946 there was a split in the football club with a number of players leaving and forming the Upwey-Tecoma Football Club.
Belcoma’s Samantha Munro said the netballers wanted to continue to play together which led to the start of the club.
She said the girls then began to represent the area rather than just one town.
The club has grown from strength to strength over the years and now fields 13 teams, and 120 players.
Munro said Belcoma was the home to many of Victoria’s league representative players.
She said it had reached many milestones over the years including being voted the best club in the association in 2006 and winning the 2007 A Grade premiership.
The club is now calling on anyone who has been involved in the club to join in the celebrations and take the chance to chance to catch-up.
The bash will be held at the Cuckoo Restaurant on Saturday 25 July from 7pm.
Tickets are now available and cost $65 per adults and $32.50 for children and can be purchased by calling Samantha on 0417 121 484 or Rebecca on 0409 330 787.
