A P-PLATE driver from Healesville, who reached speeds of more than 160kph on Maroondah Highway in an unroadworthy car, has been labelled ‘a fool’ by police.
Sergeant John Morgan, Officer-In-Charge, Yarra Ranges Transport Management Unit (TMU) said Leading Senior Constable John Saddington was patrolling the highway at Coldstream at about 10pm when he stopped the 18-year-old male.
“The first-year P-plater was doing 161km/h near St Hubert’s Winery – a stretch of highway where there had been numerous fatal crashes in the last few years,” he said.
Sgt Morgan said one of the rear tyres on the Holden utility was completely devoid of tread.
“It was a fatal waiting to happen,” he said.
The car was impounded and the man will face charges relating to speed dangerous and other speeding offences.
In America, impounded vehicles are often crushed.
