MARYSVILLE and Triangle Development Group (MATDG) is pinning its hopes of getting funding to purchase the former Marysville car museum building at a meeting scheduled for Monday afternoon, 22 June.
MATDG’s new president, Graeme Brown, told the Mail the committee was meeting with representatives of the Victorian Bushfire Recovery and Reconstruction Authority (VBRRA) and the Shire of Murrindindi and was hopeful of a positive outcome.
The Mail reported last week the committee was looking to the State Government through VBRRA to fund the purchase of the building which it would then turn into a retail precinct for the town.
MATDG members had voiced their frustration last week that more than three months down the track after initial talks on the proposal, they were still awaiting an answer.
That answer was to come on Thursday and while Mr Brown told the Mail on Monday morning his organisation was still waiting, he was optimistic the wait would now be just hours, rather than weeks or months.
The museum is one of a handful of buildings remaining and the owner is willing to sell it.
The proposal is that it be made available for a supermarket and other retail areas to help get business flowing and to cater for locals and for visitors.
While the general community consensus seems to be that it is “a no-brainer” in terms of a short and long-term project to address some of Marysville’s most urgent challenges, Mr Brown was cautious about pre-empting any outcome.
“We’re pretty hopeful we will get something out of the meeting,” he said. “Hopeful … and positive.”
He said there had been a number meetings with a lot of people.
“At this stage all we can say is that negotiations are continuing in a very positive manner.”
