HISTORIC Winton, Australia’s premier historic racing event is on again at the end of May.
Historic Winton is not exactly on the doorstep of the Yarra Valley, but is a huge favourite with the valley’s many car and racing enthusiasts.
The Mail and The Austin 7 Car Club which hosts the long-running event at Winton Motor Raceway in Benalla have teamed up over the past few years to give our locals a chance to win weekend passes to attend the event. Historically, it has proved one of the Mail’s most popular give-aways.
The event is run by The Austin 7 Club with assistance from the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria.
As a motor racing event it is unique in that it also runs motorcycles. More than 250 historic racing cars and over 100 bikes, including sidecars, from the 1920s to the 1980s can be seen on the track over 44 events.
The cars are the stars of the show at Historic Winton with the extensive range of vehicles providing a real appreciation of the evolution of Australian motorsport.
Highlights of the 33rd Historic Winton include the Fabulous Fifties with famous sports cars from the 1950s competing and on display. There will also be a display of pioneering and innovative 1950s ‘Aussie Specials’.
American muscle cars of the era will feature along with an exciting display of 1950s hot rods.
British sports cars and American convertibles are the stars of ‘Soft-top Sunday’ while the President’s Selection display will showcase a group of exotic pre-1930s sports and touring vehicles that have rarely been seen at a race meeting in Australia.
