THE Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce is urging Victorians not to take chances with unsafe cars this Easter.
“According to our figures, a third of all vehicles tested by participating VACC members last year, failed one or more of the five key safety areas,” VACC Executive Director, David Purchase said.
“It is a worrying statistic and all the more frustrating to know that most of these safety defects were easily rectified.
He urged all motorists to have their cars serviced and checked before heading off with the family over Easter.
“In particular, those who are planning to tow a trailer, boat or caravan, should have the car very carefully checked,” he said.
“A simple check of lights, brakes, tyres, steering and restraints will reduce risk of death, injury, and property damage this Easter.
“It is a simple and sensible precaution that could save lives,” he said.
“And anyone who baulks at the thought of incurring extra costs at a time when money is tight should remember that maintaining your vehicle not only potentially saves lives, but it will save you money in the long run. An efficiently-performing engine saves fuel and wear-and-tear."
He said drivers had a responsibility to ensure their vehicles were in safe operating condition.
“Please make sure you are not one of the one in three unsafe vehicles on the road,” Mr Purchase added.
