Finalists stage a close one

IT WAS a tight clash between last year’s Youth League Men’s Division two grand finalists with Waverley snatching an 11-point victory.
The Falcons showed more depth off the bench, drawing on their substitutions to hit 54 points compared with Sherbrooke’s 26.
Sherbrooke coach Jason Manton said it was a great clash between two very solid teams.
“There was lots of hustle in defence, lots of lead changes,” Manton said.
“We are looking forward to next time.”
The game was all tied up at the major break at 47 apiece, but the Falcons powered ahead to hold a narrow four-point lead at three-quarter time and managed to push this out to 11 points by the final siren.
Jonathon Ball was instrumental for the Suns, taking a game-high 28 points for the home side, with Jake Driessen managing 19 and seven.
Matt Dettmann was the high-point scorer for the Falcons, collecting 21 points and 10 boards, with Dexter Kernich-Drew notching up 19 points and seven rebounds and Dejan Kostur showing fine form with a 13-16 double-double.

Warrnambool, hoping to avenge their round one loss to the Boomers, came up against a red-hot Sherbrooke Suns team at Monbulk.
The Suns continued their winning streak and jumped out to 22-11 lead at the first break.
An even more dominant performance in the second period, outscoring Warrnambool 32-10, led to an almost insurmountable advantage at the half.
Despite a much more competitive second half, the Suns never cooled off, and their defence forced 30 turnovers for the game.
For the victors, Marcelo Calderon put up 20 points, while David Black topscored with 23 points, to go along with 10 rebounds and seven assists. Matthew Alexander was the stand out for the Seahawks with 22 points and 17 rebounds.
