COLDSRTREAM’S Carolyn Rodgers is calling for help to make life more comfortable for wildlife injured in the devastating bushfires.
Carers are nursing dozens of possums, wombats and kangaroos caught in the flames back to health.
Ms Rodgers is lending them a hand by making pouches for the animals.
She began making the fabric homes using leftover material.
After seeking thread and needles from a Lilydale textiles store, Ms Rodgers received two full rolls of cloth.
She now desperately needs people to help her make use of the generous donation.
“We need people who know how to sew and own a good machine,” she said.
“They basically just need to sew in a straight line.”
Those who can’t sew can still help by cutting and pinning patterns, trimming ends, and checking the finished product.
“Quality control is probably the best way to describe it,” she said. Shangri-La Wildlife Shelter’s Tina Hudson-Davies said the pouches were crucial.
Ms Hudson-Davies said the animals were often extremely stressed and flighty.
“The quietness and darkness of the pouch settles them down and joeys as big as 7kg will happily curl up in a pouch,” she said.
The Shire of Yarra Ranges has opened Coldstream Community Hall for the project.
Anyone who would like to help can call Carolyn on 0412 279 053 or 9739 1967.
