Police involved in highway crash

By Monique Ebrington
TWO HEALESVILLE police officers and two women from the Upper Yarra area were injured in a collision at the Warburton/Maroondah highways intersection in Lilydale last week.
The officers, whose names have not been released, were travelling west on Maroondah Highway in a police 4WD when the collision occurred between their vehicle and the 4WD turning right from Maroondah Highway into Warburton Highway, just after 6pm on Tuesday 20 January.
The two male police officers, and the female driver and her daughter were the only occupants of the vehicles.
According to Ambulance Victoria advanced life support paramedics from Lilydale and Montrose, intensive care paramedics from Ringwood East and a single responder intensive care paramedic all attended the scene.
Paramedic Jon Wright said they arrived within four minutes and medical treatment was required for the drivers and passengers in both cars.
“A 52-year-old woman suffered a fracture and a deep cut to her leg. Paramedics used a spilt to support her leg and given the potential for a spinal injury a neck brace was fitted to the woman,” Mr Wright said.
“She was transported to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition. Two men, aged 27 and 38 (police officers), and a woman in her 20s were all transported to the Maroondah Hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries,” he said.
A number of other emergency service vehicles also attended the scene to investigate and redirect traffic.
The cause of the collision is not yet known and is being investigated by the Victoria Police Ethical Standards Department.
Acting Sergeant Ian Harris of Lilydale Police said both police officers had been released from hospital.
