Choir triers sing for their supper

By Kath Gannaway
THE RecLink Rocky Road Community Choir is on the road again.
In the spirit of the inspirational Choir of Hard Knocks, people experiencing social and economic disadvantage in the Yarra Valley have the opportunity to be part of the RecLink Rocky Road Choir, a community singing group based in Healesville.
The choir was launched last year and returns in 2009 with a ‘come and try singing’ session at the Healesville memorial Hall on Wednesday, 18 February, from 1pm to 3pm.
The group is led by community singing leader Leah Marlowe – known for her involvement with groups such as Healesville Vocal Nosh, EACH Rivendell Singing Group and Toolangi Singers, funded by RecLink Australia and auspiced by EACH Rivendell.
EACH Rivendell co-ordinator Mitch Swann said the choir is supported and driven by a committed team of community volunteers, choir members and agency workers who share a passion for community singing and the many health benefits for those involved.
Mr Swann said the ‘come and try singing’ session would provide an opportunity for people to meet Leah Marlow and the other choir members; sing some fun, catchy and uplifting songs (he guarantees to raise a smile), find out about the vision for the RecLink Rocky Road Choir; and, importantly, share a delicious afternoon tea.
“No previous singing experience is necessary, just an interest in finding out more and a willingness to have a go in a safe and supportive environment,” he said.
Participants can register to join the choir on the day and collect the 2009 calendar for ongoing sessions.
An RSVP, to Mr Swann on 5962 2388, would be appreciated, so there is plenty of the “delicious afternoon tea” to go around!
