TWO motorcycles collided on the Black Spur last Wednesday killing a 49-year-old Mooroolbark man and leaving his 45-year-old wife and a 32-year-old Ivanhoe man in a critical condition in hospital.
The incident occurred when the two motorcycles collided head on, on a bend in the road.
The man died at the scene while his wife, the pillion passenger, was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The 32-year-old Ivanhoe man on the other bike was taken to Maroondah Hospital with critical injuries, where he remains.
The couple had taken their red sports bike for a scenic ride along Maroondah Highway towards Narbethong when the collision occurred, just a couple of kilometres past Fernshaw Reserve.
Emergency Services were quick to the scene with the Major Crash Investigation Unit investigating the cause of the crash.
The five-team crash investigation unit was called out shortly after the incident occurred.
Investigating Officer Sergeant Chris Carnie from the MCIU says that they are not looking at speed as being a major factor as the cause of the collision.
The Black Spur is an infamous stretch of road for collisions and Sgt Carnie says drivers should be careful while driving the winding stretch of road.
“They’ve got to treat the whole Black Spur as one long potential area for collision and slow down and take extra care,” he said.
MCIU are appealing for any person who may have witnessed either motorcycle before the collision to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit the website at www.crimestoppers.com.au
