THE SUGARLOAF Pipeline Alliance has opened applications for its $5 million grants program.
Community groups along the route of the pipeline can apply for grants of up to $500,000 each.
The communities of Glenburn, Toolangi, Dixons Creek and Yarra Glen are among the rural communities that will feel the impact of the massive infrastructure project.
Project director for the Sugarloaf Pipeline Alliance, Rod Clifford, said that tourism, recreational facilities and the environment were some of the areas likely to benefit from the Regional Benefits Grants Program, which he said was designed to off-set inconvenience experienced because of the construction of the controversial pipeline.
“This program recognises that communities along the pipeline route are being impacted by the construction process, and that giving support to local groups is one way we can off-set this in a positive, lasting way,” Mr Clifford said.
“We’re inviting the community to tell us how they want these funds spent in their area. In other words, we’re asking for ideas and projects that deserve support and will make a real difference to people,” he added.
Mr Clifford said the Alliance had already had approaches from groups wanting to take advantage of the grants.
“It could be restoring an existing town hall, or building a new playground at a local park or upgrading equipment for volunteer emergency services.
“There’s an added benefit that work is likely to be created for local tradespeople and service providers as these projects steadily come to fruition,” he said.
Incorporated community groups, schools and unincorporated groups sponsored by local government or a incorporated group can apply.
Applications will be assessed by the 14-member advisory committee, which includes representatives from the local community, Murrindindi and Yarra Ranges shires, Regional Development Victoria, Aboriginal Affairs Victoria and the Sugarloaf Pipeline Alliance.
Applications close on 15 April. For more details visit sugarloafpipeline.com.au or call Claire Garth, regional benefits manager, Sugarloaf Pipeline Alliance on 0403 028 662.
