LAUNCHING Place United, hosting Seville for the first time in many seasons, batted first when the seventh round of the YVCA’s D. J. Strachan Shield began on the weekend, under warm and clear skies that turned dark and showery by day’s end.
Launching Place was dismissed for 149, with Cameron Hoare making 31 and Hayden Atkinson 29 not out, and Dean Troyahn capturing 4/36 for Seville, which next week will need to bat better than it has been this season to be assured of getting the runs.
Woori Yallock would appear to be in control against Yarra Junction at Yarra Junction. The visitors dismissed the Eagles for 110 with Chris Fall (29) and Steve Flutter (28) the best of the batsmen, as Adam Dunne (3/3) and Michael King (2/30) did the damage. Woori Yallock was 1/46 in reply, with Mick Dwyer 26 not out.
Mount Evelyn has the points on the board against Gruyere District, at Gruyere. The home side was dismissed for 100, with Matt Tilney getting half the score. Bowling honours were shared between Chris Anderson (3/25) and Kane Jones (5/34, including a hat-trick). Mount Evelyn at stumps was 7/170, with Jones completing a great day by reaching 70, assisted by Ash Bryans (34 not out). Tilney took 2/34 and Matt Cooper 2/44.
The match at Silvan lost more than 15 overs due to rain, with Silvan 5/124 at the close against Warburton Millgrove, Clint Sharman top scoring with 59.
Hoddles Creek batted first at home against Wandin and notched 123, with Simon Davis scoring 38. Shane Luck (5/47) and Simon Young (4/30) did the damage with the ball for the visitors, who in reply were 0/5.
The R. A. Finger Trophy continued the style of play evident in the DJSS, with bowlers clearly on top.
At Woori Yallock, the home side was out for 171, with Chris Webb scoring 49 and Damien Ryan 39. Adam Burns (3/33) and Steve Morgan (3/31) were the main wicket-takers. Seville was 1/8 in reply, and will need to bat well to get the 164 runs still needed. Yarra Glen travelled to Mount Evelyn and made first use of the wicket but could only manage 138, with Lyle Merrett scoring 27 and Ian Hawkey taking 5/47. Mount Evelyn in reply was 0/44, with Mal Darvell on 40.
In a rain-interrupted match at Queen’s Park Healesville, visitor Wandin was 9/94. Alan Pearce took 3/5 from 12 overs and Michael Davern 3/20 from 11.
Warburton/Millgrove was 0/11 after dismissing Yarra Junction for 127.
