Country to city for show time

By Laura Gilmartin
LILYDALE Show will bring a part of country to the city next weekend when it features sheep-shearing, wood-chopping and rural animal exhibitions.
Animal lovers young and old can interact with goats, birds, poultry, rabbits and sheep and watch their favourite breeds battle for first prize in a dog competition.
Of course, the show’s country theme wouldn’t be the same without an appearance by the Fancy Rat – the domesticated version of a brown rat.
Visitors can drink in the Yarra Valley with a wine sample from the Yarra Ranges Regional Showcase.
The showcase’s Youth Club Pavilion will feature a horticulture exhibit and a chance for festival-goers to try fresh local produce before buying.
Those looking for retail therapy can also wander through the Jean Eales Pavilion and choose from arts, crafts and photographs.
The event’s outback exhibits will contrast Scottish Highland Dancing competitions and accompany the traditional rides, showbags and games.
Live music will also be on stage after the festival’s Grand Parade, which includes give-aways for lucky spectators.
Visitors who are interested in a new kind of Saturday night entertainment can purchase a reduced-price twilight ticket, which allows them to witness a stunning fireworks display later that night.
The 2008 Lilydale Show will be held on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 November at Lilydale Showgrounds, 27-29 Market Street, Lilydale.
