YARRA Ranges’ residents dropped off 51,400 kilograms of household chemicals at the Detox Your Home collection held by the Shire of Yarra Ranges and Sustainability Victoria last month.
The shire’s CEO Glenn Patterson said 1028 cars attended the collection this year, compared to 801 that attended the collection in 2006, an increase of 28 per cent.
“The community’s response to the collection day was fantastic,” Mr Patterson said.
“People find that their homes and garages get cluttered with all sorts of toxic substances like unwanted cleaners, pesticides, paint, weedkillers, solvents and other hazardous household products and they’re not sure how to dispose of them.”
“This service has ensured that dangerous materials being stored in local homes have been sorted, treated, recycled or disposed of appropriately and not dumped into our environment.”
