Spring carnival on track

By Kath Gannaway
THE Spring Racing Carnival is for everyone … and Yarra Valley Racing at Yarra Glen is, as always, in the thick of it.
The fun and excitement of Australia’s premier racing carnival starts on Saturday 25 October (Cox Plate Day in Melbourne) with the Yarra Valley Food and Wine Race Day.
Spend a relaxing day, not far from home, at the magnificently appointed Yarra Glen race course.
Enjoy a taste of Victoria’s finest wines and produce all showcased on-course by Yarra Valley suppliers and Yarra Valley wineries.
Add to this the excitement of local races, free children’s activities and the Cox Plate on the big screen.
Take a picnic, dine in the restaurant or book a mini marquee. Then, there is the biggest day of all – the first Tuesday in November, Melbourne Cup Day – when at Yarra Valley Racing the pacers take to the track.
It’s a day the nation celebrates a 147-year old social and cultural tradition and it’s one of the biggest days on the Yarra Valley calendar. In fact, it is the biggest harness meeting in the Southern Hemisphere!
Yarra Valley racing never fails to rise to the occasion on Melbourne Cup Day, a fun day where anything goes.
Over many years, the first Tuesday in November has gained a reputation for fashion with a penchant for drama.
It is the day to make the strongest fashion statement with an exotic or outrageous ensemble.
Enjoy the 2008 Melbourne Cup Carnival in style by dining in one of Yarra Valley Racing’s exclusive marquees or restaurants. A highlight of the day will be the Fashions on the Field competition.
Catering for anything from small groups to hundreds, there is a range of options and venues to suit. Bookings are required and it is advisable to book early. For further information phone Yarra Valley Racing on 9730 1332 or visit www.yarravalleyracing.com.au.
