Kids discover environment

SPRING at Wandin Preschool is all about discovery.
Excited to be back with their friends after the holidays, the preschoolers were immersed into a world of mini-beasts as part of the environment program.
Located in the very centre of the township, the preschool has provided an important first step to formal education for generations of children since the early 60s.
The centre offers a varied program including a range of pre-reading and pre-writing activities.
Director Janine Box says there is also a strong focus on promoting independence and social skills in the important year leading up to school.
The shaded play area is a favourite place for the children who love to investigate the frog pond and help with the vegetable garden.
“We have lots of interesting creatures in our vegetable garden and around our compost bin too, which we notice when we weed the vegie garden and look to see if any of the vegies are ready to harvest,” Ms Box said.
The other creatures found are the ladybirds, spiders and beetles.
Ms Box said the preschool has recently installed a compost bin and rainwater tanks for use on the gardens.
“The children love the natural environment, but they also love being part of the busy township hub and being able to look out and watch the cars go by and all the activity.”
Visits to the local fire station and the vet clinic are all part of a connection with the community, which Ms Box said, works beautifully.
There is also a strong parent support group.
Wandin Preschool offers programs for four-year-olds and enrolments are open now for 2009. For further information, phone 5964 4532.
