THE Yarra Valley Cricket Association 2008-09 season got underway on Saturday.
The day, starting with drizzle, eventually cleared to a fine and clear if not somewhat cool afternoon.

In the D J Strachan Shield Silvan hosted newly promoted Launching Place United with Silvan reaching 7/162 with Clint Sharman 52. Launching Place Utd in reply were 158.
Seville and Wandin played in the opening round local derby at the Wandin Cricket Ground with Wandin batting first. At the end of their 40-over innings Wandin were 8/206cc with Jason Kennedy 43, John Ormond 45 and Wayne Ross 44. For Seville Conner Regan on 2/37 and Andrew Kay 2/25 bowled well.
Following the tea adjournment Seville went to bat but with good steady bowling from the Wandin team Seville seemed to struggle and were dismissed for 161. Captain Richard Dicello lead the way with 39, Andrew Kay 36, new Wandin player for the 08-09 season, Shane Luck, taking 5/26 with the ball assisted by Scott Hasan 2/22 and good win to Wandin.
Yarra Junction hosted Healesvillle and the home side batted to reach 7/149 with Nathan Fall 46, Darren Edwards 3/33, D Rogers 2/27 lost to Healesville in a close contest 7/158. Tyson Carruthers was on 57, Brian Horner 49 and Glen Thompson took 2/10 from 7 overs.
Mt Evelyn travelled to Woori Yallock for their first match of the season and reached 8/116 at the end of their 40 overs innings. Ben Theile made 49 while for the home side Andrew Sharp and Tim Diggins both took four wickets – Sharp 4/24 and Diggins 4/25. Woori Yallock reached 5/169 cc to win the match with Ryan Smith 38 the best with the bat.
Warburton/Millgrove, following some frantic home ground repairs, hosted Coldstream. Batting first, the Warbuton-Millgrove team reached 8/198 off 40 overs – John Heywood 49, Scott Darwall 34 and S Waliker 3/28 defeated Coldstream 49 off 32 overs with P Batchelor 15, Daniel Haggar 3/8, Adam Humphrey 3/12.
In what was going to be a close contest right from the start, with the two new DJ Strachan Shield side playing each other in round one, proved to be the case as Hoddles Creek hosting Gruyere District saw the visitors batting first. Gruyere 9/120 off 40 overs lost to Hoddles Creek 9/122 off 40 overs. Sadly, no individual performances were supplied.

In the R A Finger Trophy competition Warburton Millgrove travelled to Yarra Glen with the visitors reaching 140 in their innings with N.Taylor 60 n.o. For Yarra Glen L Merrett 3/24, J Orren 2/4 v Yarra Glen (no innings score available) Shane Holland 64, Tom Davey 42, L Smith 1/8 and A Calder 1/28. Details of the winning side not available at press time.
Seville hosted Wandin with Wandin making first use of the crease to make 107 all out with Matt Walker taking 5/9. In reply Seville reached 6/166 decl, Matt Walker 36 n.o.
Mt Evelyn at home reached 122 off 38 overs with Bruce Smith 57, M White 3/35, R Steggles 3/25, Craig Selby 2/27 lost to Woori Yallock 129 off 38 overs with R Steggles 35, G Sanders 30, Drew Davey 4/18 and Robert Wilson 4/29.
Healesville at Queen’s Park hosted Yarra Junction. Batting first Healesville amassed 4/210 with Richard Maile 100, R Young 51, Will Maile 25 n.o. defeating Yarra Junction 72 all out with D Robinson 19, J Shambrook 4/19, Michael Davern 2/15 and Will Maile 2/19.

Round 2 on October 11 is another one day round with all grades on the park including the Juniors which commence, in all grades from Under 12s, 14s and 16s. The under 10 competition will get underway in late October.
