THE Rotary Club of Healesville is continuing their humanitarian work to relieve poverty in Uganda.
Having already raised $15,000 and the Rotary Club is hoping to raise much needed money to purchase a herd of Friesian cross milking cows to support widows and orphans in deprived villages in Kampala, Uganda.
Rotarian Ian (Doc) Wallace, a member of the Rotary Club of Healesville, recently travelled to Kampala in Uganda to visit his sponsor child.
Mr Wallace took the opportunity to hand over another Friesian cross milking cow to a widow caring for nine orphaned children.
“Handing over a well-bred Friesian cross cow, already in calf, to this family was a most rewarding experience,” said Mr Wallace.
“The widow and family have been provided with hope now that there will be a regular supply of milk to feed the children.”
Mr Wallace also had the opportunity to meet with the farmer, view his herd of cows and select the Friesian cross cow to hand over to the widow.
The intended name for the cow is ‘Healesville’.
Fundraising is continuing to help provide a developing herd of Friesian cross milking cows for widows and orphans and funds continue to be raised until March 2009 for this project.
The Rotary Club of Healesville plans to provide as many cows as possible and the club hopes to build up the funds from the proceeds of its Car Boot Sale on Sunday 28 September.
The entire proceeds will be directed to this humanitarian project.
