WARBURTON Bowling Club was jumping on Saturday night … and why not!
Both Warburton (1) and Warburton (2) brought home flags, and in a first for the Yarra Valley Bowls Association (YVBA) Warburton (1) took the honours for a fourth consecutive year.
The win was a resounding victory for Warburton with only one Healesville rink proving competitive, ending with a drawn game after 25 ends.
YVBA secretary Max Wilson, a member of the Healesville team, said Warburton (1) had been at the top of the competition all year and was the proven champion.
Warburton captain Bob Griffiths has played in the past three grand finals and said the win was fantastic.
“We are all absolutely thrilled. We made a pact after the game that we would make it five in a row,” he said, guaranteeing some very keen competition for the 2006-07 season.
Keith Thomas, a member of the winning Warburton (2) team said the game at Marysville was a seesaw right up to the finish.
“Marysville finished above us on the ladder so we knew we were going to have a battle and with three rinks totalled at afternoon tea time scores were 40-all,” he said.
Warburton pulled away to win by 6 shots.
